Temptation in the Garden
Temptation in the Garden reimagines the biblical origin story through a lens that centers Black identity within the foundational narrative of sin, desire, and human consciousness. Positioned within a lush, Eden-like landscape, two figures confront one another in a moment of suspended decision, framed by the offering of fruit that signals both knowledge and consequence.
Drawing from the visual language of classical religious painting, Thompson reconstructs the scene using layered photographic and generative elements, disrupting the historical absence of Black bodies within canonical depictions of Genesis. The figures are rendered with a heightened physical presence, emphasizing intimacy, vulnerability, and the tension between agency and inevitability.
The work resists a singular moral reading, instead opening a space for reflection: is this moment one of corruption, awakening, or transformation? By reclaiming this pivotal narrative, Thompson challenges inherited visual hierarchies and invites viewers to reconsider how race, power, and authorship shape the stories that define humanity.
